AI interfacesLumen Halo

ConversationProv1.0.0

A chat thread that keeps up with itself: it sticks to the bottom while replies arrive, lets go when you scroll up to read, and offers Jump to latest with a count of what arrived meanwhile. Day lines, and consecutive messages joined into runs with one avatar and header.

Built on shadcn/ui

.md
pnpm dlx shadcn@latest add @beautiful-ui-pro/lumen-conversation

Needs your registry key. Your components.json style picks the Base UI or Radix build: radix-*, new-york and default get Radix, base-* gets Base UI.

Styles didn't apply?

The CLI adds the styles to the CSS file named in components.json (tailwind.css). Check that it points at your global stylesheet, that the project uses Tailwind CSS v4, and that the file is imported in your root layout. Installed by hand: paste styles.css into that file.

Set up the Beautiful UI registry

Free pieces install from their URL with no setup (that URL gives the Base UI build; Radix projects use /r/radix-nova/<name>.json, or add the registries below and the CLI picks your build). Pro pieces need the registries below and BEAUTIFUL_UI_TOKEN in .env.local.

components.json
{
  "registries": {
    "@beautiful-ui": "https://beautiful-ui.dev/r/{style}/{name}.json",
    "@beautiful-ui-pro": {
      "url": "https://beautiful-ui.dev/r/pro/{style}/{name}.json",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${BEAUTIFUL_UI_TOKEN}" }
    }
  }
}

Usage

Import it and pass your content. The props that matter most are listed next.

Example
"use client";

import * as React from "react";
import { Conversation } from "@/components/ui/lumen/controls/conversation";
import type { ChatMessage } from "@/lib/beautiful-ui/core/chat";

const start: ChatMessage[] = [
  { id: "1", from: "user", text: "Which plan suits a team of 12?", at: "2026-10-01T09:12:00Z" },
  { id: "2", from: "assistant", text: "Team: 12 seats fit within its 15, and it includes SSO.", at: "2026-10-01T09:12:04Z" },
];

export function SupportThread() {
  const [messages, setMessages] = React.useState(start);
  return (
    <div className="h-[480px]">
      <Conversation
        messages={messages}
        timeZone="UTC"
        authors={{ assistant: { name: "Helper" } }}
        onRegenerate={(m) => setMessages((all) => all.map((x) => (x.id === m.id ? { ...x, status: "streaming", text: "" } : x)))}
      />
    </div>
  );
}

Props

  • messages–

    ChatMessage[]

    Oldest first: { id, from, text, at, author?, status? }. Without it, render your own children and keep only the scroller.

  • renderContent–

    (message) => ReactNode

    Render rich content (markdown, citations, a streaming reply). Default: the text.

  • authors{ assistant: "Assistant", user: "You" }

    Partial<Record<ChatRole, ChatAuthor>>

    Names and avatars by role; a message's own author wins.

  • userAvatarsfalse

    boolean

    Show avatars and names beside the person's own messages (a shared thread).

  • onRegenerate / onRetry / onCopy–

    (message) => void

    Retry on the latest reply; Retry on a message that failed to send; after a copy.

  • locale / timeZone–

    string

    How days and times read. Fix timeZone so the server and the browser agree.

Show all 9 props
  • gapMs300000

    number

    How far apart two messages can be and still share a run.

  • labels / messageLabels–

    Partial<ConversationLabels> / Partial<MessageLabels>

    log, jump, newMessages(n), today, yesterday; and the messages' own words.

  • apiRef–

    Ref<{ scrollToLatest(behavior?) }>

    Bring the thread to the newest message from your own controls.
