# Conversation (Lumen Halo): prompt.md (v1.0.0)

- id: `lumen-conversation` · version 1.0.0 · component · pro (Pro)
- category: AI interfaces
- build: Base UI (one set of files; its dependencies follow the build)
- install (this build): `npx shadcn@latest add @beautiful-ui-pro/lumen-conversation`
- npm dependencies: none
- registry dependencies: utils, @beautiful-ui/lumen-message, https://beautiful-ui.dev/r/lumen-foundation.json
- docs: https://beautiful-ui.dev/components/lumen-conversation
- The install command carries everything this item needs (files, CSS, tokens, npm and registry dependencies). Prefer it to copying source by hand.

A chat thread that keeps up with itself: it sticks to the bottom while replies arrive, lets go when you scroll up to read, and offers Jump to latest with a count of what arrived meanwhile. Day lines, and consecutive messages joined into runs with one avatar and header.

## Build it
- Stack: React 19 (`ref` is a plain prop), TypeScript, Tailwind CSS v4 utilities, a shadcn-initialised project with the `@/*` alias.
- Packages: none beyond React.
- Files: `components/ui/lumen/controls/conversation.tsx`; shared code: `lib/beautiful-ui/core/chat.ts`.
- Registry dependencies, installed with it automatically: shadcn `utils` (cn), `lumen-message`, `lumen-foundation`.
- Builds: one set of files for both, but its dependencies come in Base UI and Radix builds. Install the one that matches the project (see Install): a free item's bare URL installs the Base UI build of it and its dependencies.
- Exports to keep: `Conversation`, `ConversationDay`, and every exported type.
- CSS: the install merges this item's rules (the registry `css` field) into your global stylesheet, in `@layer components`, and adds the lumen foundation (tokens, keyframes, motion levels) once. Nothing to import by hand.
- Re-running `add` (or `--overwrite`) re-applies those rules: put overrides in your own CSS, never in the installed rules.
- Tokens: retheme with the `--lumen-*` custom properties (`--lumen-accent`, `--lumen-accent-foreground`, `--lumen-accent-text`, `--lumen-bad`, `--lumen-bad-text`, `--lumen-chart-accent`, `--lumen-chart-accent-foreground`, `--lumen-chart-accent-text`, `--lumen-focus`, `--lumen-good`, `--lumen-good-text`, `--lumen-hairline`, `--lumen-ink`, `--lumen-muted-ink`, `--lumen-series-1`, `--lumen-series-2`, `--lumen-series-3`, `--lumen-series-4`, `--lumen-series-5`, `--lumen-series-6`, `--lumen-warn`, `--lumen-warn-text`); this item's CSS also reads `--lumen-conversation-width`, `--lumen-font-mono`, `--lumen-font-sans`, `--lumen-radius-k`. Never add Tailwind colour classes inside the component.

```tsx
import { Conversation } from "@/components/ui/lumen/controls/conversation";
```

## Parts

| Part | data-slot | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| `Conversation` | — | The thread: scroller, runs and the jump control. |
| `ConversationDay` | — | A day line (for your own children). |

## Sound
- Keep every `data-slot` and `data-sound` attribute: the sound layer reads them.
- Installing this item adds no audio. Nothing plays until the app mounts `GlassSoundProvider` once (install: `npx shadcn@latest add https://beautiful-ui.dev/r/glass-sound.json`, import from `@/components/beautiful-ui/glass-sound`); `GlassSoundToggle` is its mute control. Without a provider the audio engine never loads.

## Match the original
- Read `components/ui/lumen/controls/conversation.tsx` as the reference implementation before changing or recreating anything, and match it: sizes, colours per theme, motion timings, copy and behaviour.
- If you deviate (a prop you can't honour, a style you changed, a dependency you swapped), say so in your reply, part by part.
- Keep the accessibility contract, the keyboard map and the motion levels listed below.

## Use it when
- chat thread, message list, AI chat history, stick to bottom scroller, jump to latest, message scroller, Lumen
- The thread of an AI chat or a support conversation
- Any log that grows at the bottom and should follow new entries

### Not when
- A single answer: use Message
- An agent's steps with approvals: use Agent Run

## Mistakes
- Give the Conversation a height (its parent's, or a class): it scrolls inside itself
- Keep message ids stable while a reply streams, or each update remounts it

## Usage

```tsx
"use client";
import * as React from "react";
import { Conversation } from "@/components/ui/lumen/controls/conversation";
import type { ChatMessage } from "@/lib/beautiful-ui/core/chat";
const start: ChatMessage[] = [
  { id: "1", from: "user", text: "Which plan suits a team of 12?", at: "2026-10-01T09:12:00Z" },
  { id: "2", from: "assistant", text: "Team: 12 seats fit within its 15, and it includes SSO.", at: "2026-10-01T09:12:04Z" },
];
export function SupportThread() {
  const [messages, setMessages] = React.useState(start);
  return (
    <div className="h-[480px]">
      <Conversation
        messages={messages}
        timeZone="UTC"
        authors={{ assistant: { name: "Helper" } }}
        onRegenerate={(m) => setMessages((all) => all.map((x) => (x.id === m.id ? { ...x, status: "streaming", text: "" } : x)))}
      />
    </div>
  );
}
```

## Props

| Prop | Type | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| `messages` | `ChatMessage[]` | | Oldest first: { id, from, text, at, author?, status? }. Without it, render your own children and keep only the scroller. |
| `renderContent` | `(message) => ReactNode` |  | Render rich content (markdown, citations, a streaming reply). Default: the text. |
| `authors` | `Partial<Record<ChatRole, ChatAuthor>>` | `{ assistant: "Assistant", user: "You" }` | Names and avatars by role; a message's own author wins. |
| `userAvatars` | `boolean` | `false` | Show avatars and names beside the person's own messages (a shared thread). |
| `onRegenerate / onRetry / onCopy` | `(message) => void` |  | Retry on the latest reply; Retry on a message that failed to send; after a copy. |
| `locale / timeZone` | `string` | | How days and times read. Fix timeZone so the server and the browser agree. |
| `gapMs` | `number` | `300000` | How far apart two messages can be and still share a run. |
| `labels / messageLabels` | `Partial<ConversationLabels> / Partial<MessageLabels>` |  | log, jump, newMessages(n), today, yesterday; and the messages' own words. |
| `apiRef` | `Ref<{ scrollToLatest(behavior?) }>` |  | Bring the thread to the newest message from your own controls. |

## Customising
- Colours: set the `--lumen-*` tokens on `:root`, or on a container with the `lumen-scope` class to retheme one area. Add the `lumen-inherit` class to follow your shadcn palette instead (`--chart-N`, `--destructive`).
- Dark mode follows the `.dark` class on an ancestor (the shadcn and next-themes convention).
- Update later by re-running the install with `--overwrite` (review the diff if you edited it). Changelog: https://beautiful-ui.dev/r/changelog.json

## Keyboard

| Keys | Action |
|---|---|
| Tab | Focus the thread, then its message actions, then Jump to latest |
| Arrows / Page Up / Page Down / Home / End | Scroll the thread |

## Motion inventory

| Interaction | What moves |
|---|---|
| Following | New content is followed instantly while stuck (no smooth-scroll lag during streaming) |
| Jump to latest | Rises in when you leave the bottom; the jump scrolls smoothly (instantly with reduced motion) |

## Accessibility contract (preserve when editing)
- The thread is a log (polite); a reply still streaming is aria-busy, so it is read once it settles
- The scroller is focusable, so arrows, Page Up/Down, Home and End scroll it from the keyboard
- Jump to latest is a real button that names how many messages arrived; day lines are separators with the day as their name

## Install

```bash
npx shadcn@latest add @beautiful-ui-pro/lumen-conversation
```

Pro item: needs the `@beautiful-ui-pro` registry in `components.json` and `BEAUTIFUL_UI_TOKEN` in `.env.local` (https://beautiful-ui.dev/account). Setup: https://beautiful-ui.dev/docs/pro. Your components.json `style` picks the build: radix-*, new-york and default get Radix, base-* gets Base UI.

## Credits
- Built on shadcn/ui (https://ui.shadcn.com)

The lumen foundation (the tokens listed above, keyframes and motion levels) installs once with the first component; its CSS is public at https://beautiful-ui.dev/r/lumen-foundation.json.
